Relay Marathon Story

About 7 years ago, I was single, living at home and working full time.  Trevon was on his mission.  I had a lot of free time in the evenings.  My cousin, Ashley, came down to live in Utah for the summer. She was thinking about going to UVU and wanted to get a job close by and check things out.

I love Ashley (as I love all of my cousins). Since we were born we have been like sisters. Her dad would come down every weekend, and Ash would come down with him.  So when she said she wanted to move down here, I was beyond excited.




One thing Ashley and I both love is running. So naturally, the second she got her things moved down here, we started running together.  Ashley pushed me to run further and harder than I had on my own. Soon we were running 9 miles a day in 100 degree heat. I was in the best shape I've ever been in.

My mom had heard about a relay marathon that was coming up with in the month that we had been running.  We all decided to do it. My mom would run 8 miles, and Ash and I would both do 9.  We were excited and ready.

Race day came, we all woke up early and drove up the canyon to the starting line. We all used the bathroom one last time, and then they started dropping people off at their hand offs.  My mom was starting, I was second, Ashley would finish for us.  They dropped me off right at Vivian park and then took Ashley to her spot.  Then I waited.  I wasn't very nervous. I was excited, and I felt confident that I could make it.

My mom came down the hill, tapped my hand and off I went. I felt really, really good. I was going at a good pace, the weather was perfect, and I had some great tunes going.




About mile 6 my foot fell asleep.  I still don't really know why this happens, but every now and then my foot will fall asleep for a while. Any one else have that problem or know why?  It only lasted for about a mile so I was comfortable again soon.  But as I was nearing where our hand off was supposed to be, I couldn't find Ashley. I figured I'd just miss judged the mile markers or something. So I kept going.

By mile 12 I knew we had something was up, but I kept going.  I still felt really well.  By mile 14 I found the guy that dropped us all off and I asked him if he had seen her run by, thinking maybe she had started before I found her.  He hadn't seen her and he said we definitely missed our hand off several miles ago. He left to go find her and have her start running my way.  I kept going anyway.


There was a guy that I had been running by the whole race. He knew what had happened with our hand off and he was so awesome to keep me going and push me on.  I still felt really good, and was really surprised about that, but he would run with me and keep me going.


Around 18 miles I had to go to the bathroom. SO BAD. My mom found me on the course and asked if I'd found Ash, and to see how I was doing.  My only complaint was that I couldn't find a bathroom. I was going to have to hold it.  But shortly after I had run into my mom, I knew there would be no more holding it, I'd have to find a bush.  The problem with finding a bush during a race, is that there are usually several people around you and you can't go hide very well.  So I had to wait for a little break. When the opportunity presented itself,  I ran to a bush, but before I could do much more than that, I had already gone.  It happens to a lot of runners, right?  So the next time I saw my mom, was at the last mile, and the first thing she did was ask if I'd peed my pants.  So I had to explain that.

Those shorts are super attractive. We were exhausted. 

I finished the race, and waited to see Ashley finish. She did shortly after.  You guys, I ran a 20 mile race. I'd never gone further than 9 miles at a time before that. What this taught me, is that if you feel like you can't go a further distance, you really can.  I started to say "If you can run 3 miles, then you can run 6" and for the most part that's true.  I've noticed that when I put myself to the test, while being prepared and hydrated, I can usually about double the distance I'm running.

Listen to your body. Stop when you need to. But try to push yourself a little further next time.

A Month of Pictures

For my little update this month on the Coffee date link up from Jenna, I wanted to do a month of pictures.  I can't believe how fast June has gone by...What?




This happens quite often when the girls are anxious to have Daddy come home from work, they wait at the window. 


I got these great new running shoes. I love getting new running shoes. 


Getting together with the girls to plan our trip to Zions. We all love ice cream, so that's kind of a must in these situations. 


Sometimes I get back from my run and this little one thinks she should still be awake. So we snuggle on the couch and watch Fixer Upper for a little while before we try to go to bed again. 


We spend a lot of time in the car during the summer. We always like to stay busy. Why stay inside all day when it's nice weather out and there's so much to do?


This was probably my favorite thing about June.  Our trip to Zions was a so much fun. Can not wait to go back!  I have some very pretty cousins.


My flowers are doing fantastic in my yard this year. This daylily was HUGE.  Some how this plant got really big and my flowers look amazing. 


And these ones finally started to look good too. They struggled for a little while. 




We do a lot of playing outside lately. Working out, playing in the water...basically anything we can do to get out some of our energy. 


These sunsets are amazing! This is one of my favorite things about running in the evening. 




We are trying to go hiking as a family more often. Last time we went to Bridal Veil Falls and let the girls splash in the water before heading back down.

Teaching Kids To Be Healthy

Has any one heard of the Iron Cowboy? He is a man from Lindon,  Utah who is currently working on running 50 Ironman races, in 50 states, in 50 days.  For those of you who don't know what an Ironman is, it's an ultra triathlon. You swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run a full marathon (26.2 miles)  He's doing that every day for 50 days, while driving to every 50 states, 50/50/50.  Here's a couple videos to show you why:




You can follow the Iron Cowboy in his journey through Facebook. You can also donate to his cause (which, I feel, is a pretty worthy cause) on his website.  I don't know him personally, I'm not affiliated with him or sponsor him, I just think he has an awesome cause and I support him in it. 



Trev and I try to teach the girls about exercise and having a healthy lifestyle.  We aren't super strict on them having snacks, although we do try to keep that to a minimum. We want the girls to enjoy things in life and not restrict them from every "unhealthy" food out there, we let them watch TV, we think it's important for them to be kids and to act like kids, but we also want to teach them how to be healthy.


Part of teaching them that lifestyle is giving them lots of ideas for playing outside.  Not just sending them out there to, hopefully, kick a ball around or to play in the sand.  But showing them fun ways to play outside. Get in the dirt and play with them.


Trevon really loves MovNat, which is a fitness system that is based on the way our bodies are supposed to move and work.  It has a lot to do with getting out in nature, instead of going to the gym, and using your surroundings and your body. (I'm not doing it justice by trying to explain it, because I just don't explain it very well. Maybe, someday, I can talk Trevon into posting on this blog and explaining some MovNat stuff to all of you. )  Anyway, when I was in Zions, Trev showed the girls one fun way to play outside, an obstacle course.




They had to go down the ramp, kick the ball, run to the cone, throw the pine cones in the bucket, balance on the board, and weave in and out of the cones.


So a couple days later, I thought I'd set one up for them.  They had to kick the ball through the cones, run and touch each cone, jump in the frisbees, balance on the board, throw the pine cones in the bucket, then they were supposed to pull the pine cones back to the beginning but M just ended up pulling the sled around instead. Still good excursive for her though. And to be honest, they ended up liking Daddy's obstacle course more I think. Mine didn't entertain them for very long.

 


If you're thinking, "yeah, but I don't have things to make an obstacle course out of", these are all things we had in our tiny shed.  Look in your garage, around your house, in you shed and you'll most likely find something you can use. Or, go to a close by park (walk there for more exercise) and make an obstacle course going down the slides, climbing ladders, running through swings.

But this isn't the only way to promote exercise in your children.  Do it through example. Go running, go on a family bike ride, take a family hike. Go swimming or just play catch in the back yard.

*Please remember what ever kind of physical activity you decide to do, to take extra water! It's hot out there, stay hydrated. 

Trevon and I are both very active, and we hope that by showing our girls that exercise is important to us, that they will learn to do it and love it as much as we do.

A Girls Weekend and a Tea Party

Last weekend Trevon went on a Father/son campout with his brothers and dad. So us girls took the opportunity to have a girls weekend.

It started out with ice cream at Maceys. Because their soft serve ice cream is the best price for a twist cone.


Then a trip to the dollar store to get some tissue paper. We ended up leaving with these little water toys too. The dollar store can be a dangerous place for money.



When the girls went to bed, I started on a little project for our Francis tea party.  


It took us a few tries to figure it out but once we got the hang of it, all this tissue paper turned into these awesome puff balls and flowers. 



They made a perfect center piece for our tables at the tea party. They are cheap and easy to make, and they are super girly. I ended up keeping them too so that I can possibly use them for birthday parties and other things.

We didn't get any pictures of the girls and I all together so we tried to take some selfies before changing out of our party dresses. It didn't go great but here's a little idea.

This tea party is a fun little tradition we started last year with all the ladies in my family.  We love being together and we look for any excuse to do that with some really good food.  To see last year's tea party go Here.

All this made for a really fun girls weekend, but we did miss our Daddy and we were all excited to have him home for Father's day.

Summer Heat Runs and An Abs Routine For You

The last week had been really hot.  I'm not complaining, I love it. But it does make running a little more challenging. We tried to run when it was starting to cool off for the day but that doesn't mean it was cool running. It was still hot.

When running gets hard because of heat, you have to find ways to make it easier and more fun for you.  For example, the best thing to me for running in the summer, is when people have their sprinklers on.   Lucky for us, there were sprinklers on during every run we went on last week. I'm not embarrassed that everyone can see me run through them.  Unless it's raining or chilly outside, I will run through just about any sprinkler I see during a run. 






Running inside is much cooler, but way less exciting. So you start to mix your treadmill routines up a bit.  This week we did intervals. It goes something like this:

Warm up 
Race pace .25 mile
Jog .25 mile
Race pace .50 mile
Jog .50 miles
Race pace 1 mile
cool down. 

There are a lot of different ways you can do this kind of a run. This is a great one for beginners. You can mess around with the distance and with the speed to what works for you. Race pace and endurance will be different for just about everyone. Listen to your body, don't over do it. You don't want to get injured or burned out. 

After doing this work out, we did some abs. They went like this:

Regular Plank for 45 seconds

Up on hands for 30 seconds

Shoulder touches 15 seconds

go back to regular plank for 30 seconds

Side Plank 30 seconds

Regular plank for 30 seconds, then other side plank for 30 seconds.

Repeat

On the shoulder touches, you want to try to keep the rest of your body still. No swaying! One easy way to do this ab work out is to find a song that you like and change moves when the phrase changes. 




Theres a little bonus for running in the evening, or early morning. Sunrise/sunset....The views are beautifully distracting.
